Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018.

This week’s challenge is Hidden Gems! I am so excited about this one because I have a few favorites that I consider hidden gems. If you have been following me on Instagram for a while, you will not be surprised by my list but hopefully, I can still recommend some unique titles.

These recommendations are listed in no particular orders, except for #1! It is a book I strongly feel any fantasy fan should try…when it comes out on September 25th.

Chuck Palahniuk novels

Some of my favorite Palahniuk books are Invisible Monsters, Survivor, Diary, and Lullaby. I really couldn’t pick a single favorite out of those 4. Haunted is my personal favorite of his works, but it’s kind of an anthology within a novel. I always hesitate to recommend Haunted because it is very gruesome (as is a lot of Palahniuk’s writing). If you are into books that really dig into the ugly side of life, give one of his a try.

Sabriel by Garth Nix

Now obviously a lot of readers know Sabriel, but I didn’t find it until very late in my reading life so I always like to include it on lists like this. It’s an older YA book and an amazing story. Sadly, the subsequent book (Lirael) was not a great read for me, but I love the first book with all my heart.

Through the Woods by Emily Carroll

If you are looking for a spooky quick read to add to your Halloween TBR, look no further than Through the Woods. This horror anthology packs a punch. You will find at least 1 story to make you look inside yourself, or be afraid of what’s outside.

The Refrigerator Monologues

Initially, I saw a lot of buzz for The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M Valente and I adored it so I feel the need to post here as a reminder to people to read this book! It’s so great and will help you process your feeling for all your favorite fridged femmes.

The Girl from the Other Side: Siúil, A Rún  by Nagabe

This recommendation is a graphic novel. It is currently 3 volumes long and tells the story of a young girl adopted by a forest spirit-type creature. I love the atmosphere and the spooky vibe of the story. I would definitely give it a try if you liked the animated show Over the Garden Wall.

The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion by Margaret Killjoy

This is a short story about a small town plagued by a mysterious curse. Because it’s a novella, I don’t want to say too much, but it’s great if you like somewhat violent modern fairytales.

October Daye series

A lot of people know Seanan McGuire’s amazing Wayward Children series. I love Every Heart a Doorway so much, and through it and Milana over on acouplereads.com I came to know and love the Toby Daye series as well. The first book is Rosemary and Rue and they make great fall/winter reads.

Rosemarked by Livia Blackburne

I recently read and reviewed the sequel to this one (Umbertouched) and even though it didn’t quite live up to my expectation, I still highly recommend Rosemarked. The book takes a deep dive into mental disorder, chronic illness, and the ways society mistreats those suffering from both. It was a real breath of fresh air for me, and I think more people should give it a try.

The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell 

If you haven’t found a book that scared you in a while, you will be scared by The Silent Companions. Everyone I have recommended this book to so far has loved it, and yelled at me a little bit for the ensuing nightmares. Great for anyone who loves classic, gothic horror.

Give the Dark my Love by Beth Revis

A lot of readers know Beth Revis from her Star Wars novels, but this was the first novel of hers I read. I was so surprised by my love for it. You can read my full review here, and the book comes out really soon so please do consider pre-ordering and supporting this amazing piece of Fantasy.
