Top Ten Tuesday: Audiobooks!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018.

This week is for audiophiles! I don’t listen to music as much as I used to, but I do listen to a lot more audio books! I was going to make a top ten list, but honestly nothing compares to my #1 audio book pick.

The Illuminae Files

I had my doubts that these audio books would be as good as people claim, but wooo boy was I wrong. They are each amazing, and absolutely deserve all the praise they get from the book community. I highly recommend listening to the audio as you read the physical book, because you do miss a little bit if you only listen. I was foolish enough to listen to the Illuminae audio book on a flight once, and it was properly terrifying. I would probably do it again though, it was worth it.

These audiobooks are fully cast, with backing soundscapes and sound effects. They do an amazing job of differentiating between characters and the types of information being presented. A transcript of a video file sounds very different from an email or instant message conversation. You also have to listen to Gemina so you can know the true awesomeness of the lollipop song.

These books are packed with action, emotion, and really fun characters that just make you want to stay in their world for as long as possible. I have reread the series twice already, and I plan to do many many more rereads in the future. The first book will always be my favorite, but I like the subsequent books more and more each time I read them. Let me know some of your favorite audio books in the comments!

  1. I haven’t read or listened to Illuminae, but your honorable mentions are all among my very favorites, so I have to check out your top pick. I’ll be listening to them by the end of the week. 🙂 Thanks for the recommendation!
