Happy Friday bibliophiles! Kibby started this tag at Something of the Book. It’s a fun way to celebrate the books you love on one of the best days of the week!
This week’s prompt is book boyfriends/girlfriends. I was tempted to just list all of the amazing book ladies I have crushes on (Nina Zenik, Paige Mahoney, Hermione, Jasnah Kholin, Odessa, Arsinoe, etc) I am a bit tired of all Valentine’s themes right now, and I’ve had a bad week! So with a healthy dose of salt, here are some bookish ships I just don’t get!
Folk of the Air: Jude/Cardan
Anyone surprised that this is first? No one? Good. I recently saw someone mention on twitter that enemies to lovers is odd, and if you just cut the love aspect out and have an enemies with benefits relationship happening it would work much better. I 100% agree, and trying to make me believe that what Jude and Cardan feel for each other is love will never happen.
The entirety of Four Dead Queens
Ok, so yeah this isn’t out yet, maybe skip this paragraph if you don’t want spoilers. There are so many things about 4DQ I didn’t enjoy, and the weird forced romance is definitely near the top of the list. I wish it had just been left out, it added nothing.
The Hunger Games: Katniss & Peeta
Yup, I went there. While I don’t dislike them together as much as I once did I still don’t entirely buy that Katniss is genuinely happy being with Peeta. I always wanted her to be with Gale, and I think she settled hardcore.
Grishaverse: The Darkling/anyone
So yeah I love The Darkling. I think he’s one of the few truly evil characters that exist in YA lit right now, and he scares me to death. He has some seductive moments, that’s part of what makes him so terrifying, it seems easy to trust him and let him win you over. With all that in mind, dude is straight up evil!!! I don’t want him with any of the precious cinnamon rolls in the grishaverse!! I do not understand shipping him with Alina at all, unless you haven’t read past Shadow & Bone. Maybe I could ship him with Mal, because Mal is white toast and The Darkling would be miserable. Sorry, not sorry.
Go ahead come at me, lol. Not really though, oh my gosh.
What ships do you just not understand? I’m looking forward to hearing some responses in the comments.
Thank you! The Darkling is straight up irredeemable and a horrible person. I don’t wish him on anyone, much less Alina!

Yeah he needs a truly evil compatriot to be his love interest, and there just isn’t one in the Grisha Trilogy.

I have never understood the Darkling/Alina thing…though maybe that’s just cause I really don’t like Alina that much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also, every time someone refers to Mal as white toast/soggy bread an angel gets it’s wings lol

Are there other ways to refer to him? 😂 Yeah I don’t like Alina either. It’s just odd to root for anyone being in an abusive/manipulative situation like that.

I’m so here for the Mal/Darkling ship! The Darkling would be like, “Let’s do something extremely evil” and then Mal would be like, “I’m sad” and then the Darkling would be tearing his hair out.

Yeah there’s no one in the Grisha Trilogy that’s evil enough. 😂
